MARYLAND LICENSING EXAMINATION

&

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

 

MARYLAND LICENSING EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:

All applicants must take and pass the NBCE Parts I through IV and the Physiotherapy Examination (Physiotherapy is required to achieve a MD License with PT privilege endorsement).  Maryland minimum qualifying scores for these parts are:  375 for Parts I, II IV and 438 for Part III and for the Physiotherapy Examination.  All applicants must also achieve a minimum passing score of 75% on the Board Jurisprudence Examination. 

THESE REQUIREMENTS ARE NON-WAIVABLE.

PHYSICAL THERAPY ENDORSEMENT:

 As stated above, applicants seeking to achieve PT privileges, must score a minimum of 438 on the NBCE Physiotherapy Examination and must also prove successful completion of a minimum of 270 hours of curriculum in physical therapy at a chiropractic college or institution accredited by CCE.

EXAM DOCUMENTATION, DEADLINES, FEES:

 All documentation, fees, applications, transcripts and supporting data MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE BOARD AT LEAST FORTY-FIVE (45) days prior TO THE SCHEDULED EXAMINATION DATE – NO EXCEPTIONS/NO WAIVERS.  Copies of transcripts are NOT acceptable.  Only signed, sealed transcripts mailed directly from the school to the Board or from NBCE are acceptable.  A non-refundable application fee of $150.00 and an examination fee of $300.00 must accompany each application made payable to “MD Board of Chiropractic Examiners”.  Only certified checks and money orders are acceptable – no cash or personal checks.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Licensees are required to complete 48 hours of continuing education and hold an updated CPR Certification in the 2-year period between renewals and are required to submit documentation verifying compliance with this requirement upon audit.  An audit of licensees is conducted every 2 years.  A minimum of 5 hours of credits must be in Communicable Disease, including AIDS/HIV and a minimum of 3 hours in Risk Management (Of which 1 hours must be in jurisprudence-review of laws/regs).  In addition, a licensee must maintain current certification of CPR qualification.

COURSE ACCREDITATION:

The Board accredits continuing education programs and courses based solely on their content.  The Board insures that these programs are directed towards improvement, advancement, and extension of professional skill and knowledge in chiropractic.  The Board may ONLY approve the credit of courses sponsored by a CCE accredited chiropractic college, the Maryland Board of Chiropractic Examiners, Maryland Board of Physicians, National Council on Chiropractic Education and the Maryland Chiropractic Assn.or other recognized state chiropractic association.  Independent courses conducted by contractors not affiliated/sanctioned by any of the foregoing will NOT be approved.

CREDIT FOR TEACHING:

 A chiropractor may receive up to 12 CEU credits over the biennial period for teaching healthcare programs, classes or courses.  The chiropractor must pro-actively present documentation to the Board for such credit.  The request must be made in writing.

COURSE APPROVAL:

Schools or individuals must submit their request for Board approval of a particular course of instruction or program at least THIRTY (30) days prior to the course convening date

The request for approval must include a full synopsis of the course, name and resume of all instructors, sponsor of the course, number of credits requested and a complete and detailed calendar, description and hour/credit/course breakdown.  The requester will be notified in writing whether the course is approved or disapproved.

SUBJECTS GENERALLY ACCEPTED FOR CEU ACCREDITATION:

  • Chiropractic principles and adjusting techniques

  • Ethics, laws, statutes, regulations

  • Diagnostic Imaging

  • Clinical laboratory diagnosis

  • Orthopedic diagnosis

  • Neurological diagnosis

  • Rehabilitative diagnosis

  • Nutritional diagnosis

  • Physical therapy

  • Communicable diseases (including AIDS/HIV)

  • Any other subject determined by the Board to have application to chiropractic

Regulations governing continuing education are found in COMAR Subtitle 43 et seq.  Continuing education credits are NOT required for inactive status.  However, when reactivating, the licensee must prove completion of a minimum of 48 hours plus CPR certification.

Audited licensees found to be deficient will NOT be renewed and may also be subject to disciplinary action by the Board.
